Many teachers and
parents complain about young children hating their writing assignments. Kids
usually do not give enough time to write and, therefore, because of inadequate
practice, their writing skills do not develop properly. The good news for these
worried parents and teachers is that students’ minds can be changed about
writing and they can be made to take an interest in their writing tasks.
Kids hate writing
either because they don’t believe in their ability to write, or they are not
allowed to write on the topics of their choice. Both of these problems can be
fixed to get the kids to take an interest in writing. And this is where parents
and teachers have to play their part. If they are able to do so, they can get unique essays written by the children.
In order to bring
the students to believe in their ability to write, they must be given as many
writing opportunities as possible. When students work on writing tasks
regularly over a long period of time, they start noticing an improvement in
their writings. This gives them confidence in their abilities. Students can be
assigned an interesting topic to write on every week. Teachers can start a pen
pal program for students where they are required to write letters to each other
on a regular basis. Students must be praised open-heartedly for their efforts.
Another way to get the students excited about writing is to give them
opportunities to write on the topics of their choice. Just as it is important
for them to learn to write on the assigned topics, it is equally important for
them to brainstorm their own ideas for writing. Therefore, students must also
be assigned free writing tasks, where they can write on any topic they would
like to write about. This would make the students learn how to think creatively
and put their thoughts on paper. While it is important that the teachers point
out the mistakes in students’ writings and encourage them to get rid of them,
students must never be criticized for these mistakes as it would only
discourage them from writing.
